On 26 June 2020, a progress meeting was held on the administrative directories of the former Seine department.
It brought together the entire team of researchers and archivists working around Greater Paris (see article presenting the field of study “Metropolis Archives“).
Following several months of work to locate sources at the Archives de Paris, at the Bibliothèque de l’Hôtel de Ville de Paris, at the Bibliothèque Historique de la Ville de Paris, at the Bibliothèque de l’Ecole des Ponts et Chaussées, a first version of a guide to sources was presented.
This guide to sources is a tool that enables researchers and students to identify those involved in the administrative life of the Seine from 1800 to the 1980s. The typology of the documents is varied: they are mainly administrative directories (“Organisation et Attributions des Services du département de la Seine et de la Ville de Paris”, “Almanachs de France”, “Annuaires du commerce” etc.) but also titles of periodicals, local official publications and books.
The reflections focused on the choice of a plan for classifying the sources (thematic? typological?) and on the prospects for development in the coming months, in particular on the progress of the project devoted to the extractions of the named entities (cf. article presenting the stakes of this field of study “What are the sources for studying the metropolization of Greater Paris”?) and on the possible connections between these administrative entities and other archive collections.
